Microsoft finalizes Windows Server Essentials 2012 small-business server
Microsoft has released to manufacturing Windows Server 2012 Essentials — the successor to Windows Small Business Server — company officials announced on October 9.
Microsoft is now delivering the product to its OEMs. It should be generally available in “all channels” on November 1, according to a new blog post, with OEMs shipping preloaded servers running the new operating system before the end of calendar 2012.
A downloadable trial version is available for evaluation purposes as of October 9. Simon Bisson of ZDNet UK reviewed the beta of the product in July.
Windows Server 2012 Essentials is Microsoft’s intended replacement for Windows Small Business Server and Windows Home Server (for those SMBs who were using WHS for business purposes). The Essentials product is a hybrid on-premises/cloud server. It will have a 25-user limit and sell for $425, Microsoft officials have said. Windows Server 2012 Essentials is one of four Windows Server 2012 flavors, with the other three being Foundation, Standard and Datacenter.
Among other features, Windows Server 2012 Essentials offers an on-site backup option with Windows Azure; cloud-based e-mail and collaboration (either using Office 365 or via a hosted service provider); and support for Storage Spaces disk-pooling.
Microsoft made the near-final Release Candidate (RC) test build of Windows Server 2012 Essentials available to testers in August.

Microsoft Develops 'Digits' An Amazing 3D Gloveless Sensor
New technology from Microsoft tracks the movement of fingers, allowing users to interact with extreme precision.
Microsoft’s latest 3D interaction device is a little sensor worn on your wrist. There’s no glove, but it tracks your fingers’ movements with extreme precision, allowing you to interact through gestures, sign language, and other motions as delicate as a pinch.
This is pretty cool, and one can see how – once they get the sensor itself a bit smaller – Digits could be used in all kinds of applications, from gaming to mobile computing to controlling every day household items or allowing disabled people to better interact with technology.

One could go on and on thinking about how this sort of device could be used – from swordfighting games like CLANG to allowing a full-fledged virtual keyboard anywhere, making typing on mobile phones much, much simpler.
The list goes on and on.
Once you combine Digits with Microsoft’s 3D projection technology – tech that could transform entire rooms into 3D environments – you can see how virtual reality gaming could be just around the corner, especially when you start figuring in the various computer-goggles and glasses that are in the works.
More importantly, you can begin to scratch the surface of what this might mean for medical technology, education, and any number of other non-gaming uses.
Wearable computing is the big buzz phrase that Valve’s Gabe Newell has been touting lately, and he’s mentioned this sort of wrist band in past talks. I think he’s on to something.
Though I will say this: however cool all this stuff sounds, when it comes to games sometimes it’s not about approaching virtual reality or total realism or fancy gadgets. Sometimes it’s just about building really good games, whatever type of controller you happen to use.

Microsoft VP: 100,000 Windows 8 apps by January
As of last week, there were an estimated 3,000-plus Windows Store style (Metro-Style) apps in the app store that Microsoft has built for Windows 8 and Windows RT. That same week, a Microsoft sales vice president told Beet.tv that Microsoft will have 100,000 apps for Windows 8 within 90 days after the operating system launches, which is October 25.
Unless that official, Keith Lorizio, vice-president of U.S. sales and marketing at Microsoft, is counting both Windows Store and Desktop (Win 32) apps, I can’t see how these missing 97,000 apps are going to materialize so quickly. (Desktop apps in Windows 8 can be listed and promoted in the Windows Store, but they cannot be purchased and downloaded directly from it, per Microsoft’s orders.)
Lorizo told Beet.tv that Microsoft is “expecting to aggressively pursue 100,000-plus apps in the first three months” Windows 8 is available. He added that Microsoft is “putting millions of dollars against that effort.”
Yes, Microsoft is creating more tutorials, more workshops and more contests to try to encourage devs to build Windows Store apps. And yes, as WinAppUpdate — which is tracking Windows Store app growth — has noted, the number of Windows 8 apps is growing steadily. Microsoft is indirectly paying for development of some of these apps, by encouraging some third-party developers to build proof-of-concept apps for customers in an attempt to get them interested in Windows 8. Teams at Microsoft, like the Bing AppEx unit, also are hustling to build Windows 8 apps for the Store.
But unless there are going to be tens of thousands Flashlight apps introduced between now and January, or unless someone’s doing some funny figuring, I am really hard pressed to see the Windows Store revving up this quickly. Microsoft officials have said previously they are not going to allow Windows Phone apps (of which there are over 100,000) to be sold through the Windows Store. Developers can use their existing Windows Phone code to rebuild Windows 8 apps, but they cannot simply put an existing
Windows Phone 7.x app in the Windows Store. Microsoft is not allowing this. And — at least for now, the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Store (formerly known as the Windows Phone Marketplace) are two separate things.
I’ve asked Microsoft if Lorizio misspoke. If there’s any further clarification around his remarks, I’ll add it to this post.
Microsoft isn’t doing much to clarify what “counts” as Windows, as my ZDNet colleague Mary Branscombe noted recently. However, Windows 8 is not the same as Windows RT, which also is not the same as Windows Phone 8 OS. Microsoft’s longer term goal is to make these as similar as possible so as to improve both the consumer and the developer experience. But not all Windows are created equal at this point. Microsoft: 100,000 Windows 8 apps will be available by February
In a television interview with Beet.TV, Microsoft’s U.S. sales and marketing vice president Keith Lorizio said that Windows 8 will be a success, calling it a “very special experience” which is driven by the consumer.
The interview revealed some rather ambitious goals for the PC maker, who expects 400 million Windows 8 devices to be in the grasp of customer hands by next July. He said:
“With Windows 8, it’s not just about pivoting around productivity, which every Windows release has been known for — now we’re going to pivot off the consumer.”
The new operating system is expect to be a strong force, as Lorizio cited the anticipated 400 million devices as a key distributor in a one billion-plus consumer marketplace. This includes both new sales and upgrades of the current Windows 7 OS.
Lorizio said it was “critical” for a wide variety of Windows 8 apps to be available if the new platform is going to be a hit. “We’re expecting to aggressively pursue 100,000-plus apps over the first three months,” the exec said.
This is billed by Lorizio as a way to improve the customer experience, but each Windows Store app will also be include paid advertisements — something the representative claims will not be a distraction. Instead, he claims that although every advertisement will be integrated, they will be “beautiful, relevant and useful”.
When asked what publishers of content could expect from Windows 8, the exec said:
“Every publisher who adds an app into the portfolio of apps we have in the marketplace … we will work with them in order to execute a deal so they can take a share of the revenue for all the ads that we sell on to the network, and the same ads will appear across the network of advertisers, and the most unique thing [..] will be a common look and feel.”
Microsoft’s partners can choose to sell their own advertisements on the network, and also have the option to select their own advertisement controls in the Windows 8 ecosystem. However, Microsoft has needed to invest “millions of dollars against the effort” to generate enough Windows 8 apps to create a “healthy ecosystem”.
Lorizio says the 400 user-mark by July first is “conservative” — but the distribution model, making the experience uniform across all Microsoft-hosted devices, and a “critical mass” of apps will make the new platform a “guaranteed success”.

Microsoft Curtails Malware Threat To PCs; Reaches Settlement With Nitol Botnet Defendants
Microsoft’s war against botnets gained momentum as reports have emerged that the Redmond giant has disrupted threats to unsecured supply chains from Nitol botnet that was found to infect computers even before they could go on sale.
The botnet was identified to be hosted on 3322.org domain and Microsoft filed a suit to control 70,000 malicious sub-domains hosted on 3322.org. The software giant resolved the issue by reaching a settlement with Peng Yong, the operator of 3322.org.
A blog post pertaining to the settlement states how Peng Yong has agreed to work with Microsoft and Chinese Computer Emergency Response Team (CN_CERT) to:
· Resume providing authoritative name services for 3322.org, at a time and manner consistent with the terms and conditions of the settlement
· Block all connections to any of the sub-domains identified in a “block-list,” by directing them to a sinkhole computer, which is designated and managed by CN-CERT
· Add sub-domains to the block-list, as new 3322.org sub-domains associated with malware are identified by Microsoft and CN-CERT
· Cooperate, to the extent necessary, in all reasonable and appropriate steps to identify the owners of infected computers in China and assist those individuals in removing malware infection from their computers
Ever since Microsoft began collecting information on 70,000 malicious sub-domains, it has been able to block over 609 million connections from over 7,650,000 unique IP addresses to malicious 3322.org sub-domains.
In addition to blocking connections to the malicious domains, Microsoft continued to provide DNS services to unblocked 3322.org sub-domains. As of Sept. 25, Microsoft successfully processed 34,954,795 DNS requests for 3322.org sub-domains that were not part of the block list.
Microsoft began sharing the infected IP information to the Shadow Server Foundation to reach as many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) whose customers were identified as victims.
Also, Microsoft initiated data sharing with over 40 impacted countries through their respective CERTs, to accelerate clean-up efforts.
This apart, as a move to sustain the momentum in notifying and cleaning victims’ computers ongoing, notification efforts are being coordinated between Peng Yong and CN-CERT from Sept. 26. Similar efforts have already helped to curtail the global infection of Waledac, Rustock, Kelihos and Zeus botnets, the blog post observed.

Microsoft may surprise music fans with October launch
Microsoft took a lot of the sizzle out of its scheduled product launches in October by announcing the products months before consumers could get their hands on primetime versions of them. However, Redmond may be playing a surprise card when it rolls out Windows 8 and its Surface tablets at midnight on October 26.
That surprise card is a new music service tied to Microsoft’s gaming platform, Xbox. While Microsoft has confirmed that it has a music service in the works called Xbox Music to replace its old Zune Music Pass, the company has been less than forthcoming with details about the new service.
Following reports last week that Xbox Music will debut with other new products on October 26, Microsoft pushed out to the press a statement long on enthusiasm and short in detail. It said:
“We’re not commenting on speculation around Xbox Music. What we can say is we’re excited for Xbox Music as our definitive music service. It’ll bring great new ways to enjoy, share and discover new music on all your Windows 8 devices, Xbox 360 console, and Windows Phone 8. We’ll let you know when we have more information to share.”
Despite Microsoft’s attempts to keep a lid on information about the new music service, unconfirmed tidbits keep surfacing. For example, The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans for the service, said Xbox Music would have both a paid and free component.
The service will run on all Microsoft devices, the report says, and eventually, on Android and iOS hardware, although that won’t be the case at its initial release.
Xbox Music will reportedly be supported in the new dashboard for Microsoft’s gaming console, as well as in updates to music and video apps for Windows 8. Integration with Microsoft’s cloud storage service SkyDrive, for storage of music and playlists, are also be an important component of the new service, according to the report.
News that Xbox Music will contain a free component similar to Spotify complement reports that Microsoft is engaged in negotiations to acquire Internet music provider Rdio. Rdio is a competitor of Spotify that offers a paid streaming music service.
Neither Microsoft nor Rdio is commenting about any potential deal. The acquisition, though, would make sense for both companies. Rdio could use Microsoft’s resources to be more competitive against Spotify. Microsoft could use Rdio to further its plans to make Xbox Music a cross-platform agnostic service.
Meanwhile, on the paid side of things, last month a “leaked” subscription screen allegedly for Xbox Music appeared on the Internet. It shows that the service can be tried free for 30 days, with a month’s use priced at $9.99 and an annual subscriptions at $99.90.
